Winter's Canter

This poem is a snapshot of an Eastern Colorado high desert autumn day.

There is nothing magical here

But a squirrel dashing there

Across that shadowed morn

To tree across the way lorn

He hopped and skipped round

The grassy hill beyond concrete mound

And waved hello to the children

Dressed warmly and walking then

Their hands held as if by giants

Against the chilly weather defiant

In red puffy jackets and waddling along

Just a mom and daughter singing song

Saying hello to the city just waking

In calm serenity before leaves raking

That cool autumn breeze wafting in

Little gray squirrel dashing jumpin'

As the three songbirds flit quick

From green treetops that stick

High in the sky a cove of life

That protect from land stuck strife

Chirps ring in their own little land

Far away from me but heard planned

As if comfort against that wintering

That plods towards us all cantering
