a poem by Joshua Brown
I saw a girl
With a book
On a train
And I dared
To see
What she read
I saw her hair
Sloppy ponytail
And whisping
shimmers in the sunrise.
And I dared
To see
What she read
I saw her shoulders
Loose but alert
Facing the waking
city
And I dared
To see
What she read
I saw her shoes
Clean white
Ankle bared
sprinters
And I dared
To see
What she read
I saw a girl
With a mask
On a train
And I dared
To see
What she hid.
