poem by Joshua Brown
I want to be happy.
When the wind blows.
And the wife touches my cheek.
As the children play merrily.
And I run down the footpath.
Where the wild animals go.
Past the shadows of the forest.
Into the clearing where ruminants herd.
Slicing grass twice a season.
And the birds prance looking.
For bugs that digest scat.
Churning nutrients.
Back into the black soil.
Upon which our campfire crackles.
Under the starry sky.
Showering us wise men with meteors.
As we discuss our cultural dances.
Dressed in bold clothes.
Warming us as the snow falls softly.
Blanketing our homes snugly.
Protecting our land from frostbite.
And cheering our dogs.
As they dash, biting the flakes.
That would melt on our noses.
Except for the slight breeze.
That makes me happy.

Thanks for reading "To Be Happy." There's a lot more poems to read around here but my most recent poem is "Apple Pie." It's basically a poem about religious zealotry as a form of childhood survival. It both reflects my own childhood but also is a contemplation of radical Islam. Or you can just read it and make your own interpretations of it!
