That's a Big Yikes, Dawg

This poem is about the word that summarily describes rejection, disdain and moral ostracism.

Yikes. In disregard for that handhold hug

I wrote into ephemeral space that judge

Words cast both literal and figurative

In some disapproval of action by acquaint

Not cool. Scary. Disapproved by others.

You endanger my community. Fear.

Gentle announce against future acts.

I don't like what you've done. Rejection.

And softer still that euphemism of eyes

Raised in some incredulity of dissociation

With that in-group that otherwise held

The humanity of universality of morals

Fuck off in Christian terms. Dehumanize.

Stay away. You're risky. Ostracism. Alone.

You really messed up. You're off the rez.

We don't have your back. You're in danger.

This spell I cast. Wizardly in that one word.

To protect myself by observed use of tongue,

My slave cast out into the world to do bid

And program those useful to coalesce in.

Thanks for reading. Yikes is a powerful word to manipulate and control people, and that's not to say that there is some moral judgement for the use of the word itself, just that it is manipulative and controlling. I know people that have used the word, and I've even used the word. This poem is kind of just a snapshot of what the word means and how it is used in political and other high pressure tribal contexts in the 2020s.

This is almost a celebration of its power and usefulness.
